I can't really think of a more quintessentially Scottish experience than driving through the hills, the cool crisp air faintly scented with moss and fern, a wisp of smoke from a cottage chimney, the dramatic scenery unfolding before you as you negotiate a single track road...at 4mph...stuck behind several four-legged woolly residents, with their own personal vendetta against you reaching your destination!
The home of happy herds!
I was lucky enough last year to be gifted a box of lamb and hogget from Clanfin Native Breeds as a birthday present from a friend who clearly knows me too well... Lamb is up there with one of my favourite things to cook and this didn't disappoint! The rack of lamb and gigot chops were particularly impressive, as well as the leg steaks and beef and Lorne sausage. Its safe to say we hit our protein goals that week!
Clanfin Native Breeds are based in Ayrshire at Hillhouse Farm near Galston. They say "Our animals are predominantly grass-fed, from grass, hay and haylage produced right here on our farm. We know that food grown on healthy land with healthy farming produces tasty food."
Clanfin have a large herd of Herdwick sheep, renowned for their lean and tender meat, as well as Belted Galloway cattle and Gloucester Old Spot and Kunekune pigs.
They sell blast-frozen meat boxes, availability of which depends on what's in season as well as seasonal fruit and vegetables directly from their farm or at local farmers markets.
If you're ever in Ayrshire and fancy trying some seriously good quality Scottish produce, from a sustainable, welfare-first producer, I'd recommend giving them a try.
You can find market days and arrange orders and pickups here. Bear in mind they're a really small operation and spend most of their days in wellies out on the farm, so call ahead if you plan to visit!
